Net Nirvana: Ascend to the Peak of Online Gaming
The first chapter begins by examining what it means to be a game designer and the skills that are needed for this role. The book then moves into some of the basics – rules and tokens, game mechanics and economics. This is followed by a discussion of the iterative design process of building, playing, analyzing and improving that all great games undergo.
In chapter thirteen, Schell focuses on the game’s interface and how it can be designed to provide good feedback, be clear and intuitive and immerse the player in the game’s world. He also outlines the need for both a physical and virtual interface that provides the player with plenty of satisfying control (he calls this “juiciness”) and communicates all the information necessary to play the game.
In the final chapter, Schell discusses the need for effective communication with clients a designer will almost certainly have to deal with at some point. He also provides tips for ensuring that the client feels included in the design process even if they don’t necessarily understand all of the ins and outs of the process.
